In this post from Robert Matlach Dental in Huntington, we look at stress and its effect on your smile. Most of us know about the physical effects of stress. Stress that is not effectively managed can really hurt your health. It can also do a number on your teeth.
The obvious hazards are teeth grinding, jaw clenching, smoking, and eating too many sugary foods. But stress can also increase plaque generation, trigger canker sores and increase the risk of periodontal disease.
In terms of grinding and clenching, this is often done unconciously, especially at night as you sleep. A night guard worn over your upper teeth can protect them.
